Executive Bios
Armando Olivera is chief executive officer of Florida Power & Light Company (FPL), a subsidiary of NextEra Energy, Inc. (NEE) and one of the largest investor-owned electric utilities in the nation. He was appointed to his current position in June 2003. Mr. Olivera plans to retire in May 2012 after observing his 40th anniversary with the company Under Mr. Olivera’s leadership, FPL’s typical customer bill is the lowest out of the state’s 55 utilities and 25 percent below the national average. At the same time, FPL customers enjoy reliability that is in the top quartile of utilities nationwide. In addition, FPL produces cleaner electricity with a carbon dioxide emissions rate that is 35 percent better than the industry average. To help deliver these benefits, Mr. Olivera has managed a multiyear, multibillion dollar capital investment program that includes expansion of nuclear capacity, a new natural gas, combined-cycle power plant that is the most efficient of its kind in the nation, and three new solar energy centers that have made Florida No. 2 in the nation in solar power. FPL also has one of the leading energy efficiency programs in the United States. Mr. Olivera joined FPL in 1972. Prior to being named to his current role, he was senior vice president of FPL’s power systems business unit. He holds a bachelor of science degree in electrical engineering from Cornell University and a master of business administration degree from the University of Miami. |
