The company developed a 10-year energy management plan to reduce energy consumption, increase power generation efficiency, reduce the use of oil and educate the public about conservation.

1981

The company established its Quality Improvement Program to improve day-to-day operations with problem-solving and teamwork. By the end of 1983, the program was considered a success and its methods became a model for companies abroad, including in Japan, Brazil and Sweden.

1984

FPL brought online an experimental 10-kilowatt photovoltaic power plant in Miami. It helped FPL gain experience with design, installation and operation of a solar power plant.

1989

FPL became the first non-Japanese company to win the Deming Award, a prestigious award recognizing Quality. The award was the culmination of years and millions of dollars in investment toward the company’s Quality Improvement Program.

1992

Hurricane Andrew, one of the most devastating and destructive storms to hit South Florida, knocked out power to nearly 1.4 million customers. FPL's restoration team worked around the clock for 35 days to rebuild the electric infrastructure and restore service.

1997

FPL Energy was established. It would later be renamed NextEra Energy Resources.

Oregon Vansycle Wind Energy Center

1998

The company's first wind site, Vansycle Ridge Wind Farm, came online near Helix, Oregon.
