Our investment in emissions-free and clean generation has reduced our impact on the air we breathe and demonstrates our commitment to environmental protection and stewardship. Our strategy is based on generating and delivering clean energy and building energy infrastructure that's reliable and affordable.
We expect that our strategic investments – in emissions-free wind and solar generation, low-emissions natural gas generation, safe and emissions-free nuclear power, industry-leading energy efficiency programs and transmission lines designed to deliver renewable energy where it's needed – will enable us to continue providing a wide range of benefits to our many valued stakeholders.
From delivering superior value to our customers, to being good stewards of our environment, to investing in the communities we serve, all while providing outstanding returns to our shareholders, being a clean energy leader is not just the way we do business, it is our business.
We're the No. 1 producer of wind energy in North America. We own and operate about 16 percent of the U.S. wind energy capacity, an amount that has nearly tripled over the past decade.
We own and operate nearly 14,000* MW of emissions-free wind energy with plans to continue expanding our industry-leading renewable energy portfolio. For 2017-2018, we expect to bring online an additional 2,400 to 4,100 MW of clean, emissions-free wind energy.
*Includes megawatts associated with non-controlling interests related to NextEra Energy Partners, LP.
NextEra Energy is the leader among the top five wind owners in North America with 13,852 MW of wind energy capacity. The runner-up, with 6,233 MW, owns less than half the wind energy capacity of NextEra Energy. The final three wind owners in the top five follow with 5,645, 4,076 and 3,363 MW of wind power, respectively.
In 2016 alone, our wind energy portfolio grew by approximately 1,460 MW. We added eight wind energy centers in California, Colorado, Kansas, Oklahoma and Texas.
We now have wind projects in 20 U.S. states and four Canadian provinces, representing a total capital investment of more than $23.6 billion and a fleet size that is comparable to the generation capacity of a top-15 utility. These projects are providing home-grown affordable energy, as well as providing economic benefits to local communities.
We produced more solar energy in 2016 than any other company in the world. About 11 percent of the U.S. universal solar capacity is owned and operated by our company.
For nearly 30 years, NextEra Energy has pioneered universal solar.
In Florida, FPL now expects to add a total of nearly 2,100 MW of new solar in the next seven years – including eight new cost-competitive solar power plants by early 2018 with 2.5 million solar panels that could wrap around Florida's coastline more than two times.
NextEra Energy is the leader among the top five universal solar owners in the U.S. with 2,262 MW of solar energy capacity. The runner-up owns 1,627 MW of solar energy capacity, with the final three owners following at 1,381, 1,373 and 810 MW of solar power, respectively.
In 2017-2018, NextEra Energy Resources expects to bring online an additional 400 to 1,300 MW of clean, emissions-free solar energy outside of Florida.
We produce universal solar energy in Alabama, Arizona, Arkansas, California, Florida, Georgia, Minnesota, Nevada, New Jersey and New Mexico, as well as in Canada.
We continue to tailor solutions for commercial, utility and public power customers to produce clean, reliable solar energy from rooftops, parking structures and vacant land. We develop, build, finance and operate these systems to help these customers control costs and meet their renewable energy goals.
