After retiring in 2022 following nearly 80 years of combined service with Florida Power & Light Company, Stanley and Andrea Thornton give back to their local community by staying involved.
Stanley and Andrea worked with NextEra Energy members of the American Association of Blacks in Energy to support the inaugural South Florida Youth Energy Academy. Through this initiative, more than 25 students gained insight into the energy industry and learned about FPL. It was important for Stanley and Andrea to support this event because it demonstrated their passion of bringing professional opportunities and access to young people.
“I was extremely honored to receive the 2023 AAPEG Alumnus Award. Kudos to the team on their dynamic inaugural Activate Conference,” Andrea said.
During their spare time, Stanley and Andrea love to travel, visit new restaurants and attend football and basketball events. Also, they enjoy supporting community service projects and nonprofit organizations. They are actively engaged in their college Alumni associations for the University of Miami and the University of Florida. Stanley volunteers with his fraternity, Alpha Phi Alpha, and Andrea volunteers with her sorority, Delta Sigma Theta. When Stanley and Andrea aren’t supporting these efforts, they enjoy staying connected to the NextEra Energy family as coordinators of the Broward County retiree network chapter.
